GOP Rep. Ken Weyler
Rep. Ken Weyler said providing food stamps, and other public benefits to Muslim-Americans is “treason.” Weyler wrote in legislative testimony, “giving public benefits to any person or family that practices Islam is aiding and abetting the enemy. That is treason.” [Talking Points Memo, 2/3/16].
Weyler also said cutting funding for mental health services would force people with mental illness to be cured. Weyler claimed mental care providers want sick people to be “patients for life." According to the Concord Monitor, “during a debate over cuts to state mental health institutions, Weyler suggested that slashing funding could somehow cure the mentally ill. ‘By cutting the amount of help we’re willing to offer, we’d like them to discover that some of these people can be cured.’” [Mother Jones, 9/23/11; Concord Monitor, 3/30/11]
